This is a UX comparison, not financial advice, and we are not affiliated with either bank. It records the public journeys on 28 September 2026; fees, offers and eligibility can change.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"test\">The low-cost chequing test<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uxa-test-brief\">\n    <div class=\"uxa-test-brief__item uxa-test-brief__item--task\"><span class=\"uxa-kicker\">01 \/ Task<\/span><p>Understand the lowest regular-fee chequing account, start a new-customer application and stop before identity submission.<\/p><\/div>\n    <div class=\"uxa-test-brief__item\"><span class=\"uxa-kicker\">02 \/ RBC<\/span><p>$4 a month, 12 included debit transactions and unlimited Interac e\u2011Transfers; displayed rebates can reduce the fee.<\/p><\/div>\n    <div class=\"uxa-test-brief__item\"><span class=\"uxa-kicker\">03 \/ TD<\/span><p>$3.95 a month, 12 transactions including two full-service transactions and unlimited public-transit payments.<\/p><\/div>\n    <div class=\"uxa-test-brief__item\"><span class=\"uxa-kicker\">04 \/ Market<\/span><p>Canada, unsigned-in desktop Chrome at 1440 \u00d7 1000, prices in Canadian dollars.<\/p><\/div>\n    <div class=\"uxa-test-brief__item\"><span class=\"uxa-kicker\">05 \/ Safe stopping point<\/span><p>Required personal details before identity evidence or account submission. No identity document, account or application was submitted.<\/p><\/div>\n    <div class=\"uxa-test-brief__item\"><span class=\"uxa-kicker\">06 \/ Recovery check<\/span><p>Continue with required details empty, inspect the summary and focus, then correct First name.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-style-uxa-verdict has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\"><p class=\"uxa-kicker wp-block-paragraph\">The 30-second result<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">TD wins the application handoff; RBC explains suitability better before the form.<\/h2><p class=\"has-lead-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">TD repeatedly named the Minimum Chequing Account, offered three identity routes, showed 7% progress and recovered from an empty submission with a linked error summary. RBC was stronger at explaining who the account suits and what extra transactions cost, but its first application screen showed a cart count of one beside a visibly blank \u201cYou\u2019ve selected\u201d area. Both recovered correctly when First name was fixed.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<nav class=\"uxa-article-nav\" aria-label=\"Article sections\"><span class=\"uxa-kicker\">Jump to<\/span><a href=\"#account\">Account<\/a><a href=\"#handoff\">Handoff<\/a><a href=\"#recovery\">Recovery<\/a><a href=\"#performance\">Performance<\/a><a href=\"#heuristics\">Expert review<\/a><a href=\"#changes\">Priorities<\/a><\/nav>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"account\">RBC does more to prevent a poor account fit<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">RBC presents Day to Day Banking at $4 a month with 12 debit transactions, unlimited Interac e\u2011Transfers, public-transit payments outside the monthly limit and no minimum balance. More importantly, \u201cideal for\u201d and \u201cmay not be ideal\u201d sections explain the light-transaction use case. The page also exposes the $1.25 over-limit charge, ATM fees, draft and overdraft costs, and fee-rebate routes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-style-uxa-screenshot\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/uxrobot.ai\/ux-audits\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/rbc-vs-td-low-cost-chequing-rbc-product.jpg\" alt=\"RBC Day to Day Banking page showing account benefits and the low monthly fee\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">RBC explains benefits, suitability and the low-fee proposition before asking the visitor to apply. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rbcroyalbank.com\/bank-accounts\/chequing-accounts\/day-to-day-banking.html\">Open the tested account page<\/a>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">TD presents Minimum Chequing at $3.95 a month with 12 transactions, two full-service transactions and unlimited public-transit payments. It clearly lists the $1.25 extra-transaction charge and Interac e\u2011Transfer fees, and it identifies fee waivers for eligible groups. The five-cent monthly difference is negligible beside usage rules, so both banks are right to foreground limits rather than price alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-style-uxa-screenshot\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/uxrobot.ai\/ux-audits\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/rbc-vs-td-low-cost-chequing-td-product.jpg\" alt=\"TD Minimum Chequing Account page showing the $3.95 monthly fee and 12 included transactions\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">TD makes the fee and transaction allowance easy to recognise. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.td.com\/ca\/en\/personal-banking\/products\/bank-accounts\/chequing-accounts\/minimum-chequing-account\">Open the tested account page<\/a>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-style-uxa-round-winner has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\"><p class=\"uxa-kicker wp-block-paragraph\">Round winner \/ RBC<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its suitability and \u201cnot ideal\u201d guidance better supports an informed decision before application.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"handoff\">TD keeps the chosen product visible; RBC renders an empty selection panel<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">RBC first asked whether we were an existing customer, then offered the mobile app or the browser. Choosing the browser led to \u201cLet\u2019s get started.\u201d A cart badge showed one item, but the adjacent \u201cYou\u2019ve selected\u201d panel was blank. Continue still worked, yet the customer had to trust that the right account remained attached to the application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">TD inserted an optional prompt to add an Everyday Savings Account. \u201cNo thanks, open a chequing account only\u201d was available, so the upsell was dismissible, but it still interrupts a customer who has already chosen a product. After dismissal, TD clearly restated \u201cTD Minimum Chequing Account,\u201d listed what was needed and offered identity by ID and selfie, an existing financial institution, or manual questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-style-uxa-round-winner has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\"><p class=\"uxa-kicker wp-block-paragraph\">Round winner \/ TD<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The selected account and next requirements remain explicit, despite the avoidable savings upsell.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"recovery\">Both banks deliver useful error summaries<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">RBC\u2019s About you step responded to an empty Next attempt with \u201cThere are 4 errors,\u201d a \u201cGo to first error\u201d control and specific inline messages. Focus landed on the alert. Entering \u201cUX\u201d in First name and moving on cleared that field and reduced the count from four to three.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">TD\u2019s contact-information step showed 7% progress and explained that each Continue saves the application and emails a return link. An empty Continue produced \u201cWe need your help!\u201d with six linked fields plus inline messages. Correcting First name removed it from the summary. This is a strong error-recovery contract: overview, specific field guidance, focus and live update agree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-style-uxa-screenshot\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/uxrobot.ai\/ux-audits\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/rbc-vs-td-low-cost-chequing-td-errors.jpg\" alt=\"TD application at 7 percent showing a page-level error summary and inline required-field messages\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">TD gives applicants both an overview and specific field-level recovery.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"performance\">TD has the stronger phone field and lab record<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uxa-metric-grid\" aria-label=\"RBC and TD phone Core Web Vitals comparison\">\n    <div class=\"uxa-metric\"><span class=\"uxa-kicker\">RBC \/ exact page<\/span><strong>1.88s<\/strong><span>LCP \u00b7 good<\/span><strong>221ms<\/strong><span>INP \u00b7 needs improvement<\/span><strong>0.05<\/strong><span>CLS \u00b7 good<\/span><\/div>\n    <div class=\"uxa-metric\"><span class=\"uxa-kicker\">TD \/ exact page<\/span><strong>1.57s<\/strong><span>LCP \u00b7 good<\/span><strong>128ms<\/strong><span>INP \u00b7 good<\/span><strong>0.03<\/strong><span>CLS \u00b7 good<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These are p75 phone Chrome UX Report results for the exact public account pages from 30 August to 26 September 2026. Both load and remain visually stable within the good thresholds. TD also meets the good interaction threshold; RBC\u2019s 221ms INP narrowly needs improvement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The configured mobile PageSpeed runs scored RBC 96 for accessibility and 92 for best practices, compared with TD\u2019s 97 and 100. RBC\u2019s exact account page included four images without alternative text. TD\u2019s findings were an unnamed consent dialog and a visible-label\/accessibility-name mismatch. These high automated scores do not prove WCAG conformance; identity and application components still need keyboard and screen-reader testing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"heuristics\">All ten Nielsen usability heuristics<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uxa-principle-review\">\n    <div class=\"uxa-principle-review__item\"><span class=\"uxa-kicker\">01 \/ Visibility of system status<\/span><h3>Name the selected account at every step.<\/h3><p>TD does; We did not assess credit, eligibility, approval, account servicing or which fee structure suits an individual. This article compares interface clarity only.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Public testing cannot show which bank completes more applications.
