We stopped when either journey requested personal details. We are not affiliated with either company. This records the public journeys on 26 September 2026; appointment availability can change at any time.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"test\">The central Manchester eye-test booking<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uxa-test-brief\">\n    <div class=\"uxa-test-brief__item uxa-test-brief__item--task\"><span class=\"uxa-kicker\">01 \/ Task<\/span><p>Find the earliest public adult eye-test appointment in central Manchester and reach the personal-details boundary.<\/p><\/div>\n    <div class=\"uxa-test-brief__item\"><span class=\"uxa-kicker\">02 \/ Place<\/span><p>Manchester Arndale: Specsavers Manchester \u2013 Arndale Centre and Vision Express Manchester \u2013 Arndale Centre.<\/p><\/div>\n    <div class=\"uxa-test-brief__item\"><span class=\"uxa-kicker\">03 \/ Service<\/span><p>Specsavers Adult eye test and Vision Express Advanced eye test, the adult eye-test option each flow exposed.<\/p><\/div>\n    <div class=\"uxa-test-brief__item\"><span class=\"uxa-kicker\">04 \/ Earliest visible time<\/span><p>Vision Express showed 9:15 on Saturday 26 September 2026. Specsavers did not reveal availability before requesting date of birth.<\/p><\/div>\n    <div class=\"uxa-test-brief__item\"><span class=\"uxa-kicker\">05 \/ Safe stopping point<\/span><p>At date of birth on Specsavers and the Who step on Vision Express. No personal details, account or appointment was submitted.<\/p><\/div>\n    <div class=\"uxa-test-brief__item\"><span class=\"uxa-kicker\">06 \/ Conditions<\/span><p>Unsigned-in public Chrome session on desktop, followed by phone-width review. The two named services may include different clinical checks and are not treated as price-equivalent products.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-style-uxa-verdict has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\"><p class=\"uxa-kicker wp-block-paragraph\">The 30-second result<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Vision Express let customers see availability before identifying themselves. Specsavers made the service choice simpler.<\/h2><p class=\"has-lead-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Vision Express wins this public booking task because it exposed the earliest observed slot\u20149:15 the same day\u2014before asking for a title, name, date of birth, email, phone and postcode. Specsavers offered a cleaner Adult eye test choice and an excellent required-selection error, but immediately asked for date of birth \u201cto create an eye test record\u201d before showing any date or time. That prevents a privacy-conscious customer from checking whether a useful slot exists.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<nav class=\"uxa-article-nav\" aria-label=\"Article sections\"><span class=\"uxa-kicker\">Jump to<\/span><a href=\"#store\">Store<\/a><a href=\"#service\">Service<\/a><a href=\"#availability\">Availability<\/a><a href=\"#recovery\">Recovery<\/a><a href=\"#performance\">Performance<\/a><a href=\"#heuristics\">Expert review<\/a><a href=\"#changes\">Priorities<\/a><\/nav>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"store\">Specsavers made the nearest store more informative<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Searching Manchester returned Specsavers Manchester \u2013 Arndale Centre first at 0.18 miles. The expanded result included the full address, phone number, parking and disabled-access availability. Vision Express returned its Manchester \u2013 Arndale Centre store first at 0.4 miles and kept the list visually lighter, but initially showed only Corporation Street and distance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-style-uxa-screenshot\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/uxrobot.ai\/ux-audits\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/specsavers-vs-visionexpress-specsavers-stores.jpg\" alt=\"Specsavers Manchester store results with Arndale Centre expanded to show distance, address, phone, parking and disabled access\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Specsavers answered practical arrival questions in the store list. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.specsavers.co.uk\/stores\">Open the Specsavers store finder<\/a>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"service\">Specsavers used a simple label; Vision Express explained what the test included<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Specsavers presented Adult eye test with the direct explanation \u201cFor customers who are 16 and over.\u201d Vision Express called its option Advanced eye test, stated a 25-minute duration and named eye-health screening, an OCT 3D scan, dry-eye assessment and UV-protection assessment. It also explained that NHS-eligible customers could upgrade in store for \u00a36. The richer description reduced uncertainty but made the option taxonomy more demanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"availability\">Only Vision Express exposed the earliest slot before personal data<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vision Express moved from Where to What to When, preserved the chosen store and service in editable summary rows, and showed available days from 26 September to 11 October. The first visible time was 9:15 on Saturday 26 September, followed by many morning and afternoon options. Choosing 9:15 moved to Who, where we stopped before entering any identity or contact data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-style-uxa-screenshot\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/uxrobot.ai\/ux-audits\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/specsavers-vs-visionexpress-visionexpress-times.jpg\" alt=\"Vision Express date and time step for Manchester Arndale showing available dates and a first appointment at 9:15 on 26 September 2026\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The earliest visible time appeared before the Who step. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visionexpress.com\/book-appointment\">Open the Vision Express booking flow<\/a>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After Adult eye test was selected, Specsavers displayed a mandatory date-of-birth form and said it was \u201cRequired to create an eye test record.\u201d The progress tracker still labelled What as the current step, even though the page was collecting personal information before When. We stopped without entering a synthetic birth date because the test boundary was the first personal-details request.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-style-uxa-screenshot\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/uxrobot.ai\/ux-audits\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/specsavers-vs-visionexpress-specsavers-dob-boundary.jpg\" alt=\"Specsavers booking flow requesting date of birth before displaying appointment dates or times\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The flow asked for record-creation data before showing whether an appointment suited the customer.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"recovery\">Specsavers provided a strong, focused required-selection error<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We pressed Continue without selecting an appointment type. Specsavers placed focus on a summary reading \u201cOops \u2013 something\u2019s not right\u201d and \u201cPlease choose an appointment type to continue\u201d, with a link back to the relevant control. Selecting Adult eye test then cleared the error and advanced. This was a safe recovery test; no personal data or booking was sent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-style-uxa-screenshot\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/uxrobot.ai\/ux-audits\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/specsavers-vs-visionexpress-specsavers-validation.jpg\" alt=\"Specsavers appointment type page with an error summary asking the user to choose an appointment type\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The error named the missing decision and linked back to it.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"performance\">Vision Express was materially faster in exact-page phone field data<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uxa-metric-grid\" aria-label=\"Specsavers and Vision Express exact booking URL Core Web Vitals comparison\">\n    <div class=\"uxa-metric\"><span class=\"uxa-kicker\">Specsavers \/ phone<\/span><strong>3.22s<\/strong><span>LCP \u00b7 needs improvement<\/span><strong>351ms<\/strong><span>INP \u00b7 needs improvement<\/span><strong>0.02<\/strong><span>CLS \u00b7 good<\/span><\/div>\n    <div class=\"uxa-metric\"><span class=\"uxa-kicker\">Vision Express \/ phone<\/span><strong>1.71s<\/strong><span>LCP \u00b7 good<\/span><strong>299ms<\/strong><span>INP \u00b7 needs improvement<\/span><strong>0.04<\/strong><span>CLS \u00b7 good<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These are 75th-percentile Chrome UX Report results for the exact booking URLs on phones, collected from 28 August to 24 September 2026. Both pages kept layout movement inside the good threshold. Vision Express loaded 1.51 seconds sooner at p75, while neither page reached the 200ms good INP threshold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The configured mobile PageSpeed run scored Specsavers 93 for accessibility and 73 for best practices. It flagged cookie-banner contrast, a positive tabindex and visible-label\/accessibility-name mismatches; its LCP diagnostic attributed 2.52 seconds to element render delay. Vision Express scored 99 for accessibility and 100 for best practices, with heading order as the accessibility failure; diagnostics also named a 4.90-second lab LCP render delay, render-blocking CSS, unused code and an unsized logo. The lab snapshot and field population measure different conditions, so neither cancels the other. Automated checks do not establish WCAG conformance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What each website gets right<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Specsavers:<\/strong> informative store details, a plain adult-service label, a visible four-step model and excellent required-selection recovery.<\/li><li><strong>Vision Express:<\/strong> service duration and inclusions, preserved editable choices, availability before identity and a clear handoff into Who.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"heuristics\">All ten Nielsen usability heuristics<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uxa-principle-review\">\n    <div class=\"uxa-principle-review__item\"><span class=\"uxa-kicker\">01 \/ Visibility of system status<\/span><h3>Make the four steps truthful.<\/h3><p>Vision Express aligned Where, What, When and Who; Specsavers collected date of birth while What still appeared current.<\/p><\/div>\n    <div class=\"uxa-principle-review__item\"><span class=\"uxa-kicker\">02 \/ Match with the real world<\/span><h3>Name what happens in the appointment.<\/h3><p>Vision Express explained duration and clinical checks; Specsavers made adult eligibility immediately clear.<\/p><\/div>\n    <div class=\"uxa-principle-review__item\"><span class=\"uxa-kicker\">03 \/ User control and freedom<\/span><h3>Let people inspect availability first.<\/h3><p>Vision Express did; Specsavers required personal data before When.<\/p><\/div>\n    <div class=\"uxa-principle-review__item\"><span class=\"uxa-kicker\">04 \/ Consistency and standards<\/span><h3>Use consistent step ownership.<\/h3><p>Personal information should live in Who, not behind What.<\/p><\/div>\n    <div class=\"uxa-principle-review__item\"><span class=\"uxa-kicker\">05 \/ Error prevention<\/span><h3>Explain the commitment before the slot is selected.<\/h3><p>Vision Express stated duration and charges; Specsavers did not expose a slot before personal data, so we cannot compare its earliest time. We did not enter identity, contact details, accept terms or confirm an appointment. In-store care, reminders, changes and cancellations are outside this test.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Public evidence cannot say which journey converts better.
